Big4 experience is quite valuable if you want to exit to a Fortune company. It can also be somewhat useful if you want to do an MBA and transition into finance. But you can do just fine with a smaller firm or even staying out of public accounting all together. Big 4 recruiters want to hire employees who could become leaders at work and in their communities. They want to hire people who can influence others and make an impact. Leadership skills are critical.
And even better news — you only need one amazing consulting resume. Besides the standard set of elements your resume must have for top consulting firms — a GPA of at least 3. Most students are unaware that the recruiters see each other quite often at events and even build friendships despite the competitive nature of recruiting. Analysts are interacting with clients and expected to contribute from day one. Accenture is also a very social firm with many networking opportunities.
New analysts are actively encouraged to attend events as this builds the skills required to work effectively with clients. These events included Friday night dinners or drinks with office colleagues, wine tasting, and even playing polo! Playing polo was a great team-building event. It provided the opportunity to see colleagues who had little experience riding horses try to hit a small ball while riding amusing. It also taught us resilience as we attempted to learn this difficult skill in a social setting.
The key difference between Accenture and the MBB firms is in the type of work they traditionally do for clients. However, when it became independent, Accenture focused its expertise on technology implementation. This differs from the MBB firms which are known mostly for their strategy consulting work though, in reality, their work is a broad mix of strategy, marketing and branding, organization, operations, and technology projects. In strategy consulting, it could take years before you see the impact of a study.
The benefits can also be hard to break out from other changes in the client organization and its market. Accenture consultants grapple with stakeholder resistance and problematic integration challenges!
For example, you might encounter client frustration with system incompatibility or with changes to current organizational processes. No one likes change. But managing change is critical to ensuring that the result of a project is improved business processes, not a PowerPoint presentation that sits on a self, unimplemented.
Accenture does do strategy projects as well, particularly in the U. And, having created dedicated Strategy and Consulting arms, this area is likely to continue to grow. Therefore you need to articulate why technology implementation is a better fit for you. If you do want to be a strategy consultant in the Accenture Consulting or Accenture Strategy arm then you need to answer why Accenture and not another firm. Say so. Do you value being part of a team and socializing as well as working with your colleagues?
If I were still to compare to competitors, I would say that you can always expect to work on meaningful and big projects at Accenture. Deloitte recruits from the same schools as we recruit but because it has a "local partnership structure" while Accenture has a global structure and policies, Deloitte partners may decide to take all kind of projects that they want as long to make their sales numbers. An Accenture partner can't. Deloitte has also a better reputation in Management Consulting although I believe both companies are on par today.
Deloitte is not as well perceived in Technology delivery. IBM might be our best competitor in terms of system integration but IBM suffers from its organizational structure as it has an elite delivery force which is called IBM Global Services and there is a cheaper organization for less skilled consultants.
IBM is not doing very well in terms of pure strategy consulting though but they do have a big advantage in the IT market as they host many clients and since they know the IT landscape of their clients, they have a competitive advantage. In the past, Accenture was trying to compete with MBB but since the publishing of the globally acclaimed article from Clayton Christensen, "Consulting on the Cusp of Disruption", Accenture decided to focus its strategy arm on consulting deals that can enable sales.
Per example, Accenture ideated, developed and delivered the Disney Magic Band few years ago. Be the first to mark this as helpful. Intern at Accenture. Accenture stands out in its ability to invest time in developing its people.
They took a shot in the dark with me in my senior year of high school by putting me on a client facing project to help expose me to the consulting industry. During my time with the company, they provided countless opportunities that helped me understand the industry through newsletters, networking events and one on one mentoring.
This is definitely a place that if you are willing to put in the effort to learn new things and take personal time to hone your skills then they will provide all the tools necessary to help you. For example, I remember during one of my meetings with my manager that he said there are specific programs that Accenture will pay for to help analyst learnhow to code if they are willing to learn. Accenture stands out through its commitment to its people in that it is willing to develop them as much as they are willing to put in the time and effort to do so.
As Accenture is a major player in multiple industries it has many competitors. In the IT consulting and services industry, it competes with multiple Indian and international IT giants. What makes Accenturestand out is its focus on innovation as well as continuing to improve existing services to their clients.
Accenture also has its own Innovation Labs to research and develop about new cutting edge technologies. It also has developed its own innovation cycle to expedite the process of integrating new technologies into their existing services and solutions. As the global consulting and services industry has moved from cost-leverage based model to due to increased cost parity of services between multiple competitors to innovation based model, I believe Accenture is well poised to compete effectively and also remain an employee friendly company at the same time.
Former Employee at Accenture. I worked at Accenture about 3 years ago. Prior to that, they had been voted "Best Place to Work" like three years in a row.
Like I mentioned earlier, once you are brought on as a permanent hire, you are treated like royalty. They have several celebrations, whether its for Holidays, anniversaries, company picnics, intramurals, they are always celebrating and rewarding their staff. They cater to their staff's health. They bring various medical staff to do health checks on their employees. They gave out fitbits for Christmas one year, I believe.
