I turned my heart to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the foolishness that is madness.
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.
By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. For the fool speaks folly, and his heart is busy with iniquity, to practice ungodliness, to utter error concerning the Lord , to leave the craving of the hungry unsatisfied, and to deprive the thirsty of drink.
This is the path of those who have foolish confidence; yet after them people approve of their boasts. And we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand of ten thousand, to bring provisions for the people, that when they come they may repay Gibeah of Benjamin, for all the outrage that they have committed in Israel. So I took hold of my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel, for they have committed abomination and outrage in Israel.
If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them. Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents. And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.
Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say? Forbidden relationships promise life, but they bring destruction, death, and divorce.
Woman Folly entices people to Sheol—to death—with her false promises. Only Lady Wisdom, the personification of what God has revealed is right, will bring us life. Often we wonder how people can make foolish decisions that destroy their lives and reputations.
The simple answer is that sin is seductive. People chase after folly because they believe its false promises. Let us take care to guard our hearts.
We are as capable of believing the false promises of Woman Folly as anyone else. Let us keep ourselves full of the divine wisdom that comes by studying God's Word so that we do not follow after foolishness. Teaching Series. Conference Messages. Tabletalk Magazine. Gift Certificates. Ligonier Ministries. But as an English proverb says, we have two ears and one mouth — listening is far more important than talking. Fools mock at making amends for sin, but goodwill is found among the upright Proverbs Fools don't repent.
One of the marks of a wise and godly person is that they're willing to admit when they're wrong. The fool will do anything rather than confess they have sinned or made a mistake.
Humbly admitting our faults part of being a disciple of Christ. Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool bent on folly Proverbs Fools are dangerous. A bear robbed of her cubs is a terrible sight; the wisest thing to do is run away, as far and as fast as possible. This proverb points out one of the consequences of folly — people get hurt because of self-centred, malicious, uninformed judgments. The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down Proverbs Fools don't do deferred gratification.
A famous test in the s and '70s, the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment, offered children a small reward immediately or a larger one if they were prepared to wait. Those who couldn't hold out for the larger reward were found to have worse life outcomes than the others. To lack self-restraint and foresight is foolish, says Proverbs.
Advice about fools in the Bible isn't meant to be judgmental or mocking. It's meant to show us how to avoid folly in our own lives.
