And all on and active! MajorNut , May 13, I know in some cases, the cabs are dummy props and there are only two that are active. I know Malmsteen does this for the visual. Joey Voltage , May 13, Joined: Dec 2, Messages: 1, Likes Received: Most bands use walls of stacks for the imposing look of them, that was one of Pete Townshends ideas behind having them originally aside from getting feedback easier.
Metal bands took that to the extreme. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden!! Can't speak for every band but when I worked with Megadeth one B cab out of 9 on each side of the stage was working and then mic'd for the PA. There were two mic's aimed at the top two speakers on each of those two cabs live, in case one speaker went out.
They also only run one amp per guitar and have an identical setup in case it goes down during the show where the tech can make that system live in a heartbeat. Since they use in ear monitors they don't really need a lot of stage sound. Incidentally they had amazing sound but it really depended on the venue. Vancouver was in the old ice hockey arena and had these huge PA cabinets in front so it was horrible but Irvine was amazing as well as San Diego both which had the PA's hanging from above and to the sides in that arc style typical of amphitheaters.

It was Jim who oversaw the design on the original straight-fronted cabinet, which featured a closed back made of plywood. The first of these cabs were made in his garage with help from Ken Gallagher and Ken Bran. Micky Gordge, an experienced violin casemaker was tasked with covering the final product. Jim knew that this cabinet would be incredibly heavy and told Pete that his roadies would not be happy having to carry it from stage to stage.
This fell on deaf ears and Pete was insistent on having his big cab. Jim went away to build his original idea and thus the Marshall stack was born.
The Who became some of the biggest purchasers of Marshall stacks, with legendary bassist John Entwistle saying that he bought the 2 nd , 4 th , 7 th , and 8 th stacks and Pete bought every one in between.
The difference between the A and the B is simply their placement in the stack. The A is the top cab featuring the slightly angled front and the B is the bottom cab with a straight front. Depending on who you ask, people will tell you that because of these slight design differences, the cabs do sound slightly different to one another, with the A being clearer and more balanced, due to the angle of the speaker being aimed more towards the players ear, while the B has much more bass presence.
Of course, like all Marshall products, the cabs were subject to a few experiments based on customer requests. Marshall Home Live for Music History.
THe story behind the infamous marshall stack You've seen them, there's absolutely no doubt about it. So yeah, it's just a punk rock anti-corporate thing. Why not just remove the logos or turn the amps around People should get over themselves and concentrate on the music. That's not necessarily true. It varies program to program and with the different networks. Unless someone's endorsed by another company or as previously mentioned is part of contract agreement and so has to hide what other gear they're playing through, the above post should pretty much end the thread, IMO.
Anthrax was doing this in the early 80's They were taping over the headstocks so kids would not buy a guitar thinking they were getting the same instrument as anthrax played, because they said most peoples gear is custom or modded.
They did not want kids to feel like they were getting ripped off. She reminds me a bit of Kim Shattuck from The Muffs, but without screaming the last bit of every song. Why do guys always tape over the Marshall Logo?
