Why was sinclair replaced

Garibaldi flew Sinclair and two young officers, Sanchez and Foster, over the surface, searching for something. Following orders, Sinclair refused to tell Garibaldi what they were looking for, and even filed fake flight plans so nobody else would know where they were. On the fifth day of searching, the ship's navigational systems and inertial dampers suddenly went offline. Garibaldi managed to crash-land the ship: Sanchez's leg was broken and Foster did not survive.

Sinclair and Garibaldi went to get help, a fifty-mile trek across the surface. They had not gone far when Sanchez linked in to report that all the ship's systems had suddenly started working again—evidence that Garibaldi was not at fault for the crash.

Sanchez also reported a dust storm on the ship's scanners, prompting Sinclair and Garibaldi to seek shelter in a nearby cave. With only five days of air and food, the wait was long and hard. Sinclair managed to maintain radio contact with Sanchez. Unknown to Sinclair, Michael had some alcohol with him, and after having a few drinks, wandered off. When Sinclair realized he was missing, he headed to the mouth of the cave to look for him, only to have the mouth of the cave collapse.

He was knocked unconscious and left half buried by the rocks just outside the cave's entrance. Sanchez realized something had happened and linked Garibaldi, who came back and rescued Sinclair from the rubble.

As soon as Sinclair came to, he wrestled Garibaldi to the ground, threatening to kill him if he ever did something as stupid as wandering off again. Moving on, they climbed to the top of a canyon and witnessed something terrible—a huge, nightmarish alien ship was hovering over an excavation site. In the site was another of those ships, still half buried—the first was digging it out of the ground.

Sinclair and Garibaldi noticed humanoid figures nearby, watching. Sinclair guessed that their communications could not work either, but they seemed to be communicating.

Figuring they were telepaths, Sinclair had Garibaldi knock him out with a stun gun as a land vehicle drew near. When the two occupants got out to investigate the unconscious Sinclair, Garibaldi got the jump on them, knocking them both out. He then woke Sinclair, and they donned the uniforms of the two telepaths.

Sinclair then explained his mission to Garibaldi. They drove the vehicle to a small camp set up by the telepaths and split up briefly. When they were discovered, Sinclair was forced to rescue Michael by driving the vehicle into one of the buildings where strange medical experiments were being conducted on human beings.

Garibaldi ended their pursuit by throwing grenades as they rushed off. After returning to civilization, the two linked in with Earthforce , returning to the site later aboard a military shuttle. When they got back, however, they found no trace of anything they had seen before—save for one burnt Psi Corps badge Michael kept. With no evidence, they eventually kept quiet about the incident.

The experience created a strong friendship between the two of them that would last for many long years. When Babylon 5 went online in March , Sinclair was chosen to be in charge of the station, even though several others were in line in front of him.

Sinclair was surprised when they informed him, as he was comparatively low ranked compared to many of the other candidates. He would learn later that he was specifically chosen at the behest of the Minbari, who were the first to sign onto Babylon 5 but only on the condition they were allowed to choose the station commander. He brought onboard Laurel Takashima as his second in command, keeping his promotion promise to her. His friend Michael Garibaldi comes on board in January as his security chief, after completing his Mars security assignment.

Their previous experience on Mars had left Sinclair with a deep trust in Michael. The first year was relatively quiet, as many different races came to the station and signed onto the Project. Finally, the Vorlon Empire agreed to send an ambassador, which meant all five of the major powers would have a voice on the Babylon 5 Advisory Council. When the Vorlon ambassador, Kosh Naranek , arrived at the station on January 4th [15] , Sinclair was supposed to meet him alone.

He took a transport tube that suddenly stalled on its way to meet the ambassador, and when he did arrive he found Kosh lying on the ground, seemingly attacked. He had Kosh taken to the Isolab , but the Ambassador's encounter suit precluded any possibility of treatment.

The Vorlon Empire specifically demanded his suit not be opened, but Sinclair ordered Dr. Benjamin Kyle to open it anyway and save Kosh. He ordered Kyle not to report anything he saw about Kosh's physiology.

Kyle learned that Kosh had been poisoned, but needed to know the exact entry point. Sinclair asked the human telepath Lyta Alexander to scan Kosh's mind and figure out how he was poisoned.

Lyta successfully saw that the poison was administered through the hand—seemingly by Sinclair himself. Kosh recognized Sinclair greeting him with the internal acknowledgement "Entil'zha, Valen". There was an uproar on the station as Sinclair flatly denied the charges, and he was temporarily relieved of command.

Laurel Takashima , acting in Sinclair's stead, voted against the resolution, and Delenn of the Minbari Federation abstained. G'Kar had contacted the Vorlons, however, and they voted in affirmation. As the Vorlons sent a small fleet to force the handover, Sinclair and Garibaldi managed to learn that the attack had been carried out through the use of a changeling net. The real culprits were a radical clan within the Minbari Warrior Caste called the Wind Swords , who had sent a lone assassin to frame Sinclair.

When Sinclair discovered the assassin's identity, he demanded to know the reason why, but the assassin only replied enigmatically that "there is a hole in your mind" before triggering a bomb on his person.

Sinclair managed to escape the blast and was exonerated of the charges against him—but the assassin's words prompted him to wonder for the first time about what really happened to him during the Battle of the Line. Sinclair had been involved with Carolyn Sykes during this time, but they split up shortly after the incident with Kosh.

Carolyn wanted Sinclair to resign and go into business with her, but that was not for him. Laurel Takashima. As station commander, his decisions would often be met with criticism or hostility among the political factions back on Earth.

On the eve of the Earth Alliance elections, the Narn attacked and seized a small Centauri agricultural colony, Ragesh 3. Sinclair called for an emergency session of the B5 Council and the League, hoping to impose sanctions against the Narn. However, the Earth Alliance did not want to commit itself to possibly being involved in a conflict during the elections.

Sinclair decided to personally lead a team of Starfuries to intercept a band of Raiders before they could attack a supply ship carrying colonists.

He left Lt. Ivanova to act in his stead in the Council, and told her to act as though he had not been able to tell her his orders from Earth. Sinclair's squadron easily dispatched the raiders and discovered a command and control ship. Once they boarded the vessel, they discovered a Narn officer, as the Narn had been supplying weapons to the Raiders. The ship also intercepted transmissions from Ragesh 3 proving the attack was unprovoked, despite the claims of the Narn.

Sinclair used this evidence to compel G'Kar to get the Regime to withdraw from the colony. The new chief medical officer, Stephen Franklin , arrived in March Franklin had known Sinclair previously. When an unidentified alien ship tumbled out of hyperspace, headed for a collision with the station, Sinclair quickly grabbed a Starfury to try and grapple the ship, hopeful for a first contact situation.

He was successful, and the sole being on the ship was taken to the Isolab for treatment. Delenn accompanied Sinclair to the medlab, where she recognized the alien as a Soul Hunter and begged Sinclair to get rid of him immediately. She explained who the Soul Hunters were and how the Minbari abhorred their practice. Many other aliens aboard either barred themselves inside their quarters or left the station as soon as possible. Sinclair spoke to the Soul Hunter when he awakened, skeptical of his claim to be able to take a person's soul at death.

He told the Soul Hunter he would be kept in custody in the lab until his ship was repaired, then he must go on his way. The Soul Hunter escaped, however, and kidnapped Delenn. A second member of his race then came aboard, explaining the first had gone rogue. Sinclair located Delenn, confronting the Soul Hunter, who warned Sinclair that Delenn was "satai" and that the Minbari were using him.

Sinclair killed the Soul Hunter by turning his own soul stealing machine on him. Afterwards, he forbade any Soul Hunter from commencing activities on B5, and turned over the rogue's collection to Delenn. Sinclair is charged with negotiating the Euphrates Treaty , which would settle a Narn-Centauri dispute in the Euphrates Sector. He is annoyed when Ambassador Londo Mollari consistently delays the negotiations.

Londo finally admits to Sinclair that a woman whom he loves, Adira Tyree , is in trouble. Londo confesses that Adira's master Trakis has also stolen Londo's Purple files , which contain information that could bring the Centauri Republic to its knees.

Sinclair agrees to help if Londo accepts his compromise in the Treaty, which Londo agrees to. They first go undercover to find Adira, but when that fails, Sinclair manages to trick G'Kar into helping them locate Trakis, Adira, and the files. The Euphrates Treaty is signed shortly thereafter. On the second anniversary of Babylon 5 going online, ISN sent a reporter to interview Sinclair, though he was not happy about it.

The day she arrived coincided with the arrival of Vance Hendricks and Nelson Drake , who smuggled aboard an ancient Ikarran artifact. The device took over Drake, attacking Dr. Franklin and badly injuring him. Sinclair confronted Hendricks, who claimed he had no idea what was happening. Drake, assimilated into an Ikarran warrior, lashed out according to the device's programming, killing several people on the station.

Sinclair coordinated security teams from C'n'C. Once recovered, Franklin was able to learn about the device's purpose: it was designed to purify the Ikarran race, but had worked too perfectly and killed everyone on the planet. When brute force failed to stop the organic warrior, Sinclair decides to lure the creature to an airlock by enraging it, forcing it to bring up Drake's memories a dead Ikarra.

The device then separates itself from Drake. Afterwards, Garibaldi confronts Sinclair about being too gung-ho, too needing to play the hero. Sinclair admits he does not have an answer for Michael. Later on, he finally has his interview with reporter Mary Ann Cramer. Earth Central decides Babylon 5 should host a week long festival celebrating the dominant belief systems of all the races aboard.

Sinclair was tasked with demonstrating Earth's, and he had no idea at first how to carry this out. At the beginning of the week, Sinclair's old flame, Catherine Sakai , comes aboard.

Garibaldi lets him know, and while at first he decides to avoid her, he soon sets out to meet her. He invites her to dinner at Fresh Air , and she reluctantly accepts, worried about them falling into old habits. They talk about old times, and how they get back together every two to three years only to break up again. They both admit they miss one another.

Sinclair has to go directly from dinner to a Minbari Rebirth Ceremony. Catherine meets up with him the following day, and their passion reignites, leading them to sleep with one another.

Catherine's job will keep her close, and they decide to try and make it work. On the last day of the festival, Sinclair arranges for Earth's demonstration—a long line of individuals representing each of Earth's hundreds of belief systems. Sinclair dislikes Bester, as do most of his crew, particularly because of Bester's condescending attitude as well as his rough treatment of Talia Winters. Talia comes to him quietly and explains she and Jason were lovers when they were younger, and that he came to say good-bye.

He agrees to meet with Ironheart without Bester, and Ironheart warns him that the Psi Corp modified his abilities to uncontrollable levels in their attempt for control. Delenn also used a similar device to change herself into a half Human half Minbari hybrid. Also found on this planet were the time warp devices Sinclair and the other B5 crew used to travel though time.

Actually, it wasn't due to the actor leaving the show. This was pre-planned from the start by the showrunner, J. Michael Straczynski. He wasn't sure just when Sinclair would leave B5 at first, but then decided to do it at the end of season 1. So Sinclair's disappearance was fully intentional. Just that the Vorlons manipulated the younger races throughout history, and the Shadows rebel against that, and try to set themselves up as rulers of the galaxy.

They also want Sinclair and Delenn dead. Everyone in the galaxy is after them for one reason or another B4 is renamed Babylon Prime. B Prime can move through space like a starship, and they go off on a mission to clear their names and build the alliance to bring peace to the galaxy.

I'll call the baby David, even though his name is never mentioned here. David grows all the way to adulthood within a few years. No mention of what happens to the Vorlons. Earth defeats the Minbari, and Sinclair's name is cleared. Delenn leaves Sinclair, in order to return to the Grey Council. David becomes the leader of a new interstellar alliance.

Final scene is Sinclair, retired, alone on an otherwise uninhabited world That's what was planned. I wonder what would have happened as things went along. Last edited by Jokerz79; at PM. Just things always seemed to happened with actors leaving and uncertainty of how long they'd continue take Season 5 a lot of changes were made because they thought season 4 would be their last and Claudia Christian left after 4 Sleeping in Light was filmed in Season 4 even.

Originally season 4 would end with Sheridan being taken prisoner and the Earth Civil War would end in the first 5 or 7 episodes of Season 5. Ivannova would be made Commanding Officer of B5 and having lost Marcus take a chance on love with Byron while exploring her telepath powers but still lose the person she loves Lyta would had been a follower of Byron and had a unrequited love for him very much a theme in B5 with Marcus and Lennier.

Even Lyta and Talia's were swapped back forth with actresses leaving and returning it's why they had Ironheart give Talia a power boost it was meant to replace the arc with Lyta if Tallman never came back. More intersting was how Sheriudan's wife was Catherine Sakai's replacement. Both were archeologists. Sakai was heading off to more and more dangerous places and my theory was she was due to be lost in Season 2 on Zhadum. My query however, is the ersolution of war Without End had Sinclair going back in time.

So how the hell would that have all worked out? Dan February 1st 02, joev How's that for a disclaimer? B4 was to be pulled into the FUTURE, with an older Sinclair and Delenn, who Sinclair married tie-in: first season, Minbari rebirth ceremony doubling as a marriage ceremony , in a future battle with the "darkness," which at that time, is probably NOT the Shadows.

This explains why the future Sinclair in "Babylon Squared" was gray-haired. The warning that the future Sinclair tried to deliver, mentioned in "Babylon Squared" would have been a warning about what happened to Centauri Prime, as described in the Centauri Trilogy, and seen in the future scene in "War Without End.

Then, at the end, where in the new version Sheridan goes off with Lorien, at the end of his life, Sinclair would go back to become Valen. Obviously, the Valen in the new version couldn't have known that, whereas in my scenario, Valen would have known the outcome of the Shadow War.

In my version, B4 didn't have to go back into the past - just Sinclair. I'd love it if JMS would tell us what the original plan was in addition to what the story is. Joe Find More Posts by joev February 1st 02, Recoil. This has been discussed numerous times in this forum. In fact if you look back through past threads you will probably see some of it. A Sheridan character was going to be introduced anyway in mid season 2 because JMS was realizing that there was too much he wanted to accomplish for just 1 character.

As for War Without End and Babylon Squared, some believe that WWE was supposed to be sort of the series finale as well as you did, but with a different twist. It would still take place 20 years in the future which is why Sinclair had grey hair in B-Squared. However it was at that point that he was supposed to go take B4 back in time and become Valen. Or, as mentioned, look back through past threads. Its all in here somewhere. Find More Posts by Recoil.
