Invalid sibling link what is

They are both great utilities that do different things. In most cases, Disk Warrior is preferable because it fixes everything up for you automatically, but when you really need to get files off a drive that Disk Warrior can't fix, Data Rescue can really live up to its name. At least that was the case when I used it years ago. Anyone else who has had more recent experiences with it might be able to comment.

Diskwarrior can repair an invalid sibling link but there is no guarantee it can repair your particular hard drive. Not an ideal situation, I know. I'm not saying you should, but if you, um, borrowed a copy to see if it worked and then bought it if it did, say, then I don't think God would strike you down. You'd definitely lose all your data if you reformat so don't do that. I forgot to mention this, but Data Rescue has a free demo you can download.

They claim the demo will scan the drive and list all the files it can recover, but it will only let you actually recover one file until you decide to pay. I guess you get to pick any file up to k in size. Since Data Rescue only reads from your drive and never tries to write to it, it certainly couldn't hurt to try out this demo. I'd definitely recommend that then instead of the morally sketchy thing I suggested.

Reformatting will erase all of your data! I have used Data Rescue for OS X it is an amazing product, as has been noted it has a demo mode so you can try it to see if it can recover files. Disk Warrior is also a great product, it has saved many a drive. But I would spend the bucks on a new drive.

You need one for backup anyway! Yes, reformatting will lose data but you can reinstall and will have a bootable machine afterward. And I apologise that this blog is every so slightly geeky. But the point of this blog is to detail the recovery of my Mac.

I also just tried the standard fsck and fsck -fy and fsck -yf commands but each time it comes back with " volume Macintosh HD could ot be repaired".

If it still replies "volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired" that is all you can do. There is no harm in trying it repeatedly until you decide to give up. What I find confusing one of the many things! With the comand you suggsted the one with the hfs in it i doesn't make it that far. It just says its an illegal operation. My mac says it is running OS X Also, just to give some extra context: When i initially booted up when this started the main notable thing was that finder wouldn't work while other systems semi-worked.

I just booted up again in safe mode and finder seems to be working. Everything isn't quite as it should be slow programs etc though. Dec 1, PM in response to penben In response to penben.

You need to purchase at minimum a thumb drive and attempt to backup as much of your user data as possible in Safe Mode. You also need to acquire a new "start-up" DVD from Apple. Once, your data is backed up then reformat the hard drive and install a new operating system from the DVD. Dec 2, AM. Afaik, given the hints by John Galt didn't work for you, you have no other choice but DiskWarrior and you'd better backup everything while you still can.

I see you can't afford DW, but that's it and you can't be certain even DW will do the trick. This quote is from the Alsoft Support Batabase:. This is an error you definitely don't want. It indicates that parts of your directory, and therefore some of your files and folders, are inaccessible. Each file or folder item on a disk has an entry in the disk's directory. These entries are in order of enclosing folder and then item name. This is similar to a yellow pages directory being ordered by type of business and then business name.

Just like a yellow pages directory, the disk directory has pages except that its pages are called nodes. Unlike the yellow pages, nodes are dynamic and change as you add and delete items. It's sort of like a realtime yellow pages. Imagine that the pages of the yellow pages are not in order and at the bottom of each page it says "Continued on page n," where n is the page that contains the next set of listings for the particular type of business that you're looking up.

Well nodes are not arranged in order and each node has a reference, or link, to the next node that contains the next set of ordered items. This link is what is referred to as the sibling link. A sibling link error is a bad link to another node. Either the link refers to the wrong node or it refers to an invalid node. As I said, a sibling link error makes some of your items inaccessible and can even prevent a disk from mounting.

Sibling errors are notoriously difficult for some of the patching type of disk repair utilities to repair.
