Unfortunately, there are plenty of times when STEM education goals take away from music programs, literature studies and the arts in general. As adults, plenty of us made it through school learning STEM principles, and once we were done with school, we started learning what WE wanted to learn.
Maybe we were lucky enough to have music classes or private lessons, but, very few of us spent as much time as we wanted following the beat of our own drum, so to speak. What we mean is that despite a calling to play drums and use rhythm to give us life, drumming is still STEM education.
Plus, drumming enhances HOW we learn about those concepts. Math puns. Sandfan almost 11 years ago Why did the mathematician take drum lessons? To provide a backbeat to the music of the spheres.

Sam was willing to defend his answer, as we all new the principles of the slide rule.
But, he asked, how did the magic box divine its answer? Could the student explain it? I was glad to read a few messages later that you were a teacher. But I was glad to read your comments and I think your students are fortunate. MelChamp1 almost 11 years ago Because he wanted to improve his logarithms. I knew it would turn out to be a big number, but finally we have been lucky enough to find someone with the time and inclination to give it some proper thought!
Step forward Musiclab drum student and maths man Simon Dray I have assumed a simple scenario: - we're sticking no pun intended to the snare; - on any beat, you can play a stroke, an accent, or a rest; and - what you play on one beat has no bearing to what you play on the next therefore some will sound a little lame - eg a bar of 16 rests.
You have 3 choices of what to play on the first note. For each of these choices, there are 3 further choices of what to play on the second note, so there are 9 variations 3x3 across 2 notes.
